A young fleet officer and a Marine stand together to defend their colony in the continuation of the powerful and action-packed Genesis Fleet saga from New York Times bestselling author Jack Campbell.
In the three years since former fleet officer Rob Geary and former Marine Mele Darcy led improvised forces to repel attacks on the newly settled world of Glenlyon, tensions have only gotten worse.
When one of Glenlyon's warships is blown apart trying to break the blockade that has isolated the world from the rest of human-colonized space, only the destroyer Saber remains to defend it from another attack. Geary's decision to take Saber to the nearby star Kosatka to safeguard a diplomatic mission is a risky interpretation of his orders, to say the least.
Kosatka has been fighting a growing threat from so-called rebels--who are actually soldiers from aggressive colonies. When a "peacekeeping force" carrying thousands of enemy soldiers arrives in Kosatka's star system, the people of that world, including Lochan Nakamura and former "Red" Carmen Ochoa, face an apparently hopeless battle to retain their freedom.
It's said that the best defense is a good offense. But even if a bold and risky move succeeds, Geary and Darcy may not survive it...

"Campbell improves as a writer, creating characters who are more fleshed out and real than in earlier books. At the same time, he cares about things like fuel for his ships, vectors and acceleration and deceleration, and the science to make his action scenes feel believable. Great stuff."

Ascendant Genesis Fleet The Jack Campbell Books Reviews
- another great book in the series. Great small scale space battles and ground forces engagements the battles have a more desperate feel to them because the stakes are higher for those involved. Same great characters as the first novel but little character development the exceptional people remain exceptional but we have little further insight into who they are as people. There's some more insight into the development of what the book calls the star believers religion and that is clearly cool. But the book make one point unclear the enemy in these books are the worlds allied with scatha but it also talks about colonists that went even further out to exist under a corporate system. Which one of these became the syndicate or did they combine That's unclear. This novel takes place over a relatively short time compared to its peers I can't complain about all the action pack into every page but the story didn't advance much.
- Campbell/Hemry is a great story teller. He creates good sci fi without over the top science conjecture. His writing is intelligent, well constructed and carefully edited. This is fun stuff made very readable by a true professional who seems to enjoy his work and respects the intelligence of his readers.
Ascendant is the second book in a new series that is off to a great start. Campbell's past series were also enjoyable quality reads. If reading is your pass time and sci fi your guilty pleasure, you can't go wrong here. Take my advice and start with the "Lost Fleet"series first, it will make Ascendant even more enjoyable when you get here. - Another great installment by Jack Campbell. His heroes and heroines are heroic, without being infallible, flawed but still likable, unique and distinct without being stereotypes. The action scenes, both on the ground and in space, are vivid and dramatic and the conflict within the POV characters pulls the reader in. This may very well be Jack Campbell's best series so far.
- True to form, Campbell has breathed new life into a classic military scifi series. The level of detail in character development at the microscopic level, is again, excellent, and Campbells ability to cover a multi-faceted conflict with enoguh detail to make the reader feel every trigger pull and see every explosion, is breathtaking, and skillful to say the least.
- Campbell improves as a writer, creating characters who are more fleshed out and real than in earlier books. At the same time, he cares about things like fuel for his ships, vectors and acceleration and deceleration, and the science to make his action scenes feel believable. Great stuff.
- Very entertaining read. Once again, the author strikes a great balance between wins and losses. The pacing was perfect. This is turning out to be a most satisfying series. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.
- As all of Jack Campbell's books I have read, Creates great characters and tells their story in an engaging and realistic manner. His vision of the world or universe his story unfolds is clear and believable. All the trademarks of a great writer.
- I had to go back and read the first book to get the flow again. After that it was a good follow up to the first book and left you hanging for the next book in the series.
