Enrique Vila-Matas’s new novel is perhaps his greatest “playful and funny and among the best Spanish novelists” (Colm Tóibín)

Mac is currently unemployed and lives on his wife’s earnings from her furniture restoration business. An avid reader, he decides at the age of sixty to keep a diary. Mac’s wife, Carmen, a dyslexic born of dyslexic parents, thinks he is simply wasting his time and risking sliding further into depression―but Mac persists, and is determined that this diary will not turn into a novel. However, one day, he has a chance encounter with a near neighbor, a highly successful author who once wrote a collection of enigmatic, willfully obscure stories. Mac decides that, while he will not write his own stories, he will read, revise, and improve his neighbor’s, which are mostly narrated by a ventriloquist who has lost the ability to speak in different voices. As Mac embarks on this task, he finds that the stories have a strange way of imitating life. Or is life imitating the stories? As the novel progresses, Mac becomes stranger and more adrift from reality, and both he and we become ever more immersed in literature a literature haunted by death, but alive with the sheer pleasure of writing.

  • This review has nothing to do with Hungry Girl. Infact I am a huge fan. What this is about is the way this book was manufactured. I literally opened it yesterday and in 2 places the bind broke and pages started coming out. That is ridiculous for a brand new book. I figured I’d write this review to make it known in case someone gets a book like mine.
  • I was so excited to get the latest Hungry Girl cookbook. Simply 6 is ok, and there are recipes that I will make....but it’s not as many as I make from Lisa’s Clean and Hungry Obsessed, which I cook from at least once a week.
  • I have been an HG fan since the early years and I really like this cookbook. The recipes are simple and approachable, and really take me back to the roots of the HG brand...making healthy eating EASY. I made the orange sunrise smoothie this morning and my 4 year old loved it.

Other things I like about this cookbook
*The way it’s organized. Super easy to find recipes that work for your specific needs.
    *Gorgeous pictures.
    *Lots of veggie centric recipes.
*Plenty of options for family-size servings.

I look forward to trying more recipes and will update my review once I do!
  • I love this book!!! It is geared to my way of cooking “quick and easy”!! I have tried a couple so far and planning on two more this weekend. If you’re trying to eat better and lose weight or just get tired of the same old food and you don’t want to hunt for ingredients or spend more time making it then eating it “GET THIS BOOK “!!! Just hit the purchase button and I promise you will not be disappointed .
  • Very unhappy with the physical quality of this book. The first book fell apart at the binding within the first day. I was sent another which arrived the same way. The book is poorly put together.
  • I love all of Lisa’s cookbooks because they don’t just fill my bookshelf and collect dust. I actually use them. The recipes are good for those on the go
  • Book arrived damaged . Binding broken and pages pulled out. Very disappointed.

Enjoy the romance and wit of the charming Dashwood sisters in Jane Austen's classic tale Sense and Sensibility.

Jane Austen's debut novel, Sense and Sensibility has been resonating with readers since it was first published in 1811 and has been made into a number of adaptations.

The Dashwood sisters couldn't be more different. While Elinor lives her life in a reasonable manner, Marianne tends to make decisions following her heart. But when it comes to finding a husband, the sisters realize, through much trial and error, that a combination of their personalities is ideal when it comes to finding true happiness. Beyond the romance, Sense and Sensibility is chock-full of humor and wit that is also a commentary on British middle-class society at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Austen's mastery of irony, dialogue, and realism support character development and make Sense and Sensibility a pure pleasure to read. Complete and unabridged, this elegantly designed, clothbound edition features an elastic closure and a new introduction by Christina Bartolomeo.

"Everyone who purports to love the classics has read Jane Austen, right? Well, I hadn't, so I thought I'd better get on it. I started reading Sense and Sensibility about a year ago but couldn't get into it. The language of the time is so flowery that to describe one thought or action takes a great many words, and sentences can be so long that by the end of them I'd forgotten what was at the beginning. Austen is not someone you can skim. I put the book down for many months and read a ton of other books that I liked better.

A few months ago I read Daisy Miller and The Yellow Wallpaper (those are two separate works and not a treatise on Daisy Miller choosing yellow wallpaper for her domicile), and the flowery language of those got me back into the mindset where I could finish Sense and Sensibility. I will admit that I'm glad I've seen the 1996 movie (with Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, et al) a few times so I knew the basics of what was going to happen. However, I believe there are some differences between the book and movie. I'll have to watch the movie again just to see if my memory serves.

About this edition - I like the inclusion of the illustrations. They are rather small on the screen, but clicking them enlarges them somewhat, and you can zoom in to see more detail. There are a few typographical mistakes - I'm guessing that a printed page was scanned for digitization, because there were a few instances where the letter b was where an h should have been: "bas" instead of "has" and the like. There aren't many of those, and they shouldn't interfere with your enjoyment of Elinor and Marianne's trials and tribulations and eventual... nah, I'm not going to post any spoilers just in case you're one of the very few people who don't know the story.

The main question I am left with is: Will I read another of Jane Austen's books? Yes, I believe I will, but I'm going to take a break and read some more straightforward books first to clear my head."

Sense And Sensibility Knickerbocker Classics edition by Jane Austen Christina Bartolomeo Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • No Austen story can tempt me more than Pride and Prejudice, but I do consider Sense and Sensibility to be something of a clumsier precursor to that beloved book. Austen ambitiously balances humor, sincerity of affection, meditative reasoning, and even a testosterone-fueled midnight scene between a selfish lover and the book's protagonist, Elinor.

This is another story that cautions young women against cads and knaves of varied shapes and sizes. In the most roundabout 18th century English manner, scandals abound amongst a cast of people unwittingly observed by a toying, omniscient narrator. I love the roundness of all the characters, even the (numerous) un-pitiable antagonists. Austen has a masterful flair for characterizing someone's essence in a few paragraphs, and following up duly on it by addressing you with his/her direct speech. Never was a man made so abhorrent as after John Dashwood speaks of his and his wife's misfortunes. What a card! It's hard to believe he comes from the same stock as his sisters Dashwood.

This is a masterful novel because Austen is a badass master writer. Or should I say mistress? I have never encountered a more clairvoyant portrayal of ladies' plight during this time in England. They are constantly subjugated to sexist laws, endless man-splaining, and the fretful existence that hinges on a man's regard for her 'pretty face'.
In her own way, Austen's narrator reveals the nuances in the most basic human traits that occur in even the most elegant of settings... And made me wonder, on more than one occasion, which character's opinions I should trust. When everyone is convinced of his/her own self importance, whose judgment are we to believe? Our heroine, Elinor, guides you to judge for yourself with propriety and caution; her sense is all the time checked by the unparalleled closeness between a somewhat desperate circle of women and their good-natured friends. There is much to entertain!
This is amazing work is inspired and truly ageless. I cannot recommend you to a better Saturday afternoon read (except maybe Pride and Prejudice lol but that's just me). Enjoy!

Haben grew up spending summers with her family in the enchanting Eritrean city of Asmara. There, she discovered courage as she faced off against a bull she couldn't see, and found in herself an abiding strength as she absorbed her parents' harrowing experiences during Eritrea's thirty-year war with Ethiopia. Their refugee story inspired her to embark on a quest for knowledge, traveling the world in search of the secret to belonging. She explored numerous fascinating places, including Mali, where she helped build a school under the scorching Saharan sun. Her many adventures over the years range from the hair-raising to the hilarious.

Haben defines disability as an opportunity for innovation. She learned non-visual techniques for everything from dancing salsa to handling an electric saw. She developed a text-to-braille communication system that created an exciting new way to connect with people. Haben pioneered her way through obstacles, graduated from Harvard Law, and now uses her talents to advocate for people with disabilities.

HABEN takes readers through a thrilling game of blind hide-and-seek in Louisiana, a treacherous climb up an iceberg in Alaska, and a magical moment with President Obama at The White House. Warm, funny, thoughtful, and uplifting, this captivating memoir is a testament to one woman's determination to find the keys to connection.

A moving and uplifting history set to music that reveals the rich life of one of the first internationally renowned female violinists

Spanning generations, from the shores of the Black Sea to the glittering concert halls of New York, The Nightingale's Sonata is a richly woven tapestry centered around violin virtuoso Lea Luboshutz.  Like many poor Jews, music offered an escape from the prejudices that dominated society in the last years of the Russian Empire. But Lea’s dramatic rise as an artist was further accentuated by her scandalous relationship with the revolutionary Onissim Goldovsky.

As the world around them descends in to chaos, between revolution and war, we follow Lea and her family from Russia to Europe and eventually, America. We cross paths with Pablo Casals, Isadora Duncan, Emile Zola and even Leo Tolstoy.  The little girl from Odessa will eventually end up as one of the founding faculty of the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, but along the way she will lose her true love, her father, and watch a son die young.  The Iron Curtain would rise, but through it all, she plays on.

Woven throughout this luminous odyssey is the story is César Franck’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano," a work championed by Lea, one of the first-ever internationally recognized female violinists.  It became a touchstone for her, for her multi-generational family of musicians, and for scores of her students who played this masterwork throughout the world.

One of five women who endured horrific trials to win the hand of Nicholas Cavendish, Lady Joanna Nethercutt suffered greatly throughout the ordeal, ultimately losing to Victoria Hamilton. She swiftly finds herself sold by her own father, who’s determined she’ll be of use to him yet. For a year, she’s “trained” in preparation for marriage to Victoria’s brother, with whom she’ll be expected to produce heirs that will one day strengthen and continue the very society responsible for all of Joanna’s torment.
In the space of a breath, Theodore Hamilton is thrust into a secret society he knew nothing about, and married to a woman who seems terrified of his very existence. Suddenly, his carefree yet honorable life is filled with secrets and shadows, allies and enemies, leaving Theodore unsure who to trust…starting with his broken bride. His lure to the delicate beauty is tempered by external influence, lies and manipulation from all sides.
In this breathless conclusion to the Dark Sovereignty series, Theodore must decide where his loyalties lie, and race to destroy the evil men responsible for the immeasurable suffering of everyone he holds dear—including the wife he never wanted, but can’t possibly live without.

"Fantastic conclusion to an outstanding series!
A Father’s Insistence is the dramatic ending to the dark society of depraved evil men.
The focus is on the dynamics of Theo and Joanna.
Theo is so loyal to his father he’s blinded by what everyone is telling him and the telling signs he sees but chooses to ignore.
Joanna is so scared and paranoid that she’s willing to do anything not to go back into the clutches of the Viscount.
I loved seeing how both Theo and Joanna came to trust and love one another.
How their relationship, even though based on lies, still flourished and blossomed.
Ms. Edwards just did a phenomenal job with the writing of this trilogy.
Her words kept me hooked to each book.
The plot and storyline were incredible!
It had me on the edge of my seat and my heart pounding hard.
And the characters are an unforgettable group.
Strong and courageous. Especially the women!
Enjoyed every minute of reading this book and the previous ones as well."

A Father Insistence Dark Sovereignty Book 3 edition by Anna Edwards Romance eBooks Reviews

  • A Father’s Insistence is the last instalment of this dark series and what an intense and suspenseful end it is...I think this book made me feel every emotion I felt angry, sad and frustrated at times, but also there are some funny and joyful moments, providing a counterbalance to the more sombre themes.

The author has created a fascinating world populated by an equally intriguing group of characters.
This is Theo and Joanna’s story but whilst they are central to the plot, the other individuals and couples both good and bad from the previous books in the series also play their parts. Theo is a good man and although his loyalties are misplaced his actions always come from good intentions. Joanna has suffered terrible abuse and should be broken, but in truth she has a strength of character, which has kept her strong in the face of the depravity she has endured.

There are secrets and truths to be revealed in this final episode and an evil manipulative foe to be vanquished, but when the enemy hides in plain sight it is not always possible to protect the vulnerable and innocent.... This was a riveting finale and the epilogue provides a wonderful insight into the future of those left standing...I received and advanced copy of this book from the author.
  • The stories told throughout this series were dark with many twists and turns. Ultimately love triumphs and the characters that you come to know and care about find the love that sustains them. Awesome series Anna Edwards. I'm a true fan of your work.
  • I'm in love with this series. It was dark and twisted but became something completely beautiful at the end. I love Anna's books, she's truly talented. I would totally recommend this series!

  • This is a series where each successive book has been even better than the last. I really do recommend reading A Father's Insistence if you enjoy a good romantic suspense that dips its toes (and feet) into the dark. However, whilst it is a complete story in it's own right, I do recommend that you read the other two books in the Dark Sovereignty series in order to fully understand the suspense element.

So I picked this up yesterday evening, intending to only read a chapter or two before going to bed. Yeah, big mistake. For me this was TOTALLY one of those books where you 'just need to read the next few pages' before you can put it down. I didn't even dare look at what time I closed the book, but it wasn't until I'd reached the very end of the epilogue - oops. I can totally go to work on a few hours sleep.

I found it easy to connect to Theo and Joanna, they felt believable and were both incredibly likeable. The author did a very good job of writing the deception element of the story. Why wouldn't someone believe their father's version of events, when there has never been anything to raise your suspicion? I did feel he accepted the drugging incident too easily, but that was only a very minor part of the story. Particularly as subsequent events would have distracted him from pursuing it further.

Joanna felt broken without feeling weak, her responses to events were believable and well explained. Whilst I struggled to totally believe Theo was utterly in love with her after such a short time together, Stockholm Syndrome and her view of him as a rescuing hero made it easy to believe Joanna's feelings. What is undeniable is the strong chemistry between the pair, they certainly heat up your kindle!

Personally I thought the epilogue 'felt' different to the rest of the book. I loved knowing what had happened to people etc. though I would have been just as happy with a very simple event showing how the 'Society' had changed.

This trilogy was my introduction to the author, but it's definitely not going to be the last book I read by her. Her writing, character development, exciting plots and ability to weave a twisty tale leave me needing more of it.

Award-winning writer Matti Friedman's tale of Israel's first spies has all the tropes of an espionage novel, including duplicity, betrayal, disguise, clandestine meetings, the bluff, and the double bluff - but it's all true.

The four spies at the center of this story were part of a ragtag unit known as the Arab Section, conceived during World War II by British spies and Jewish militia leaders in Palestine. Intended to gather intelligence and carry out sabotage and assassinations, the unit consisted of Jews who were native to the Arab world and could thus easily assume Arab identities. In 1948, with Israel's existence in the balance during the War of Independence, our spies went undercover in Beirut, where they spent the next two years operating out of a kiosk, collecting intelligence, and sending messages back to Israel via a radio whose antenna was disguised as a clothesline. While performing their dangerous work these men were often unsure to whom they were reporting, and sometimes even who they'd become. Of the dozen spies in the Arab Section at the war's outbreak, five were caught and executed. But in the end the Arab Section would emerge, improbably, as the nucleus of the Mossad, Israel's vaunted intelligence agency.

  • Few books grab and hold me from start to finish but this was one that I just could not put down. It contains factual information that I had never before known regarding the birth of the Jewish State and those brave youngsters who repeatedly risked their lives in support of the birth of Israel despite the largely disorganized activities they conducted daily. The author's descriptions of the places, activities and players made me feel as if I was personally participating from page to page throughout his excellent reporting. BRAVO and THANK YOU to the author as well as each and every participant described herein.
  • It's almost an oxymoron to be a "spy of no country," and yet here it is spies of a yet-to-be country, so immersed in their work that they were unaware of Israel's birth. The danger was palpable, and Friedman portrays it with tasteful restraint.

Words rarely fail me, but in trying to describe the book, here they do. It's small, but it's intensely moving. It was hard to put down.
  • Though not yet a nation, Israel’s fledgling intelligence network recruits four, heroic Sephardic Jews devoted to the Zionist ideal. Sketchy stories, serious and dangerous, emerge from the author’s overly detailed but murky style. As Israel’s resources were limited and impoverished, the young men largely depended on their own wits and skills.
Clearer however are Friedman’s accounts of Ashkenazi racism against their Arab Jewish brothers Friedman refers to as “blacks” knowing the term is inaccurate. Interestingly omitted are the many derogatory terms Ashkenazi Jews pinned on European Jews, those from Germany, Poland, Romania etc. More shocking was the nefarious suggestion that Sephardic Jews were not wanted in Israel, but what could the Ashkenazi do?
The book winds in and out of the spies individual stories. Regretfully remiss by the book’s end, Friedman offers not even a wink of Israel’s fully integrated society. No doubt Israel’s first spies, (immigrants from both societies,) lived to see their grandchildren marry Jews from the very different cultures.
And Yigal Allon, never had a home in Israel? Really? In spite of all his many successes? Fascinating. IDF commander, Government minister, Renowned archeologist with unfettered access to Israel’s antiquity of which he enjoyed..
    Not Friedman’s best work.
  • When Americans think of Israeli history, we fasten on a handful of names Chaim Weizmann. David ben Gurion. Golda Meir. We think of kibbutzim, the Israeli Defense Force, the country's great universities, and its legal system. All these people, and many others whose names are prominent in the country's history, are of European origin. And every institution they created was a product of European thought and tradition. That simply reflects the fact that "in the 1940s, nine of every ten Jews in Palestine came from Europe."

Yet the persistent image of Israel today as a Western outpost in the Eastern Mediterranean is highly misleading. To understand how that changed and so deeply influences the nation's politics today, you can do no better than to read Israeli-Canadian journalist Matti Friedman's revealing new book, Spies of No Country.

Four young Arab-speaking Jewish men were the first Israeli spies

Friedman's book tells the tale of four young Arab-speaking Jewish men who became spies for the scattered forces working to establish the State of Israel. They had emigrated to join Jewish settlements in Palestine from their homes in Damascus, Aleppo, Arab-occupied Jerusalem, and Yemen. They were, in a word, Asian Jews, like millions of others who later fled the towns and cities of the Middle East and North Africa following Israel's declaration of independence in 1948.

Though Friedman doesn't venture into Israeli political history, it's clear that long-neglected population rose into prominence in 1977 with the election of Menachem Begin. The country's rightward shift ever since then is one result. As Friedman points out, Asian Jews account today for half the country's population, and they tend to be poorer and less well educated than those of European descent. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's long term in office is only the most recent manifestation of the sea change they embody in the country's political orientation.

"There was no state called Israel, nor did it seem likely there would be one."

The four men who constitute Friedman's principal subject were among some ten Arab-speaking Jews recruited by the Palmach in the years leading up to the War of Independence. They were formed into an Arab Section that has received scant attention from historians. The men were sent, singly or in teams, to Beirut and other Arab capitals to gather intelligence, armed with their wits and only the most minimal training. "There was no state called Israel, nor did it seem likely there would be one. The United Nations had no way to enforce the partition plan" mandated by the General Assembly in November 1947. And war had immediately broken out following its passage.

They were "the embryo" of the Mossad

It's difficult to imagine how poorly trained and ill-equipped were the men of the Arab Section. As Friedman wrote, "there weren't any cars. At the time, the Arab Section didn't even own a radio. When they needed a camera for one surveillance mission . . . they'd had to borrow a Minox from a civilian they knew." And at first there was no money, either. "It wasn't just that the Palmach couldn't pay salaries. The unit couldn't always cover bus fare or a cheap plate of hummus for lunch, and on at least one occasion agents had to stop trailing a target because they didn't have money for a night in a hostel.

"The men lived by their wits, acting on instinct that frequently led them to make mistakes. Yet they survived (unlike most of their fellows in the Arab Section), and they succeeded in feeding useful intelligence to their handlers in Palestine. "[A]fter hostilities began in 1948, the Section proved to be one of the only effective intelligence tools the Jews had."

However, there is no earth-shattering revelation in Spies of No Country. The four agents's "mission didn't culminate in a dramatic explosion that averted disaster, or in the solution of a devious puzzle. Their importance to history lies instead in what they turned out to be—the embryo of one of the world's most formidable intelligence services." And one of the four men Friedman writes about became one of Mossad's most celebrated agents.
  • Well and carefully researched, this book reads like good spy fiction, given gravitas by thoughtful reflections of the author. Recommended for anyone interested in true spy accounts or the origin story of the State of Israel.
  • Just when you think there is nothing new to learn about the post-WW II British Mandate era, along comes a book like this.
This is the story of people that history books left behind.
Well written book. Very insightful and informative.
  • Evocative. The reader “is there.” The book gives insight about the subject unknown to us in the West.

    The book is profoundly human.
  • This is yet another great story from Matti Friedman that can be read with so many different lenses.
